Verification is the largest fresher hiring area in Indian chip design.
What the job is
A verification engineer tries to break the design before it becomes silicon. You read the spec, plan what must be tested, build a testbench, write tests and measure coverage until the team is confident.
Verification runs in parallel with RTL design and often takes more effort than the design itself. That is why it is the largest hiring area for freshers in India.
The work is part hardware and part software. You write object-oriented SystemVerilog, use UVM, write assertions and automate regressions with Python or shell.
A day in the role
- Triage last night's regression: sort failures into testbench bugs, RTL bugs and spec questions.
- Debug one failure in waveforms and file a clear bug report to the RTL owner.
- Write a new constrained-random sequence to hit an uncovered corner case.
- Add SystemVerilog assertions for a protocol rule, such as AXI VALID not dropping before READY.
- Review the coverage report and update the verification plan.
- Improve a Python script that launches and summarizes regressions.
You’ll enjoy it if
- You enjoy finding bugs and thinking about what could go wrong.
- You like programming and want to stay close to hardware.
- You are comfortable reading protocol specs such as AXI, UART or PCIe.
- You like measurable progress: coverage goes up, open bugs go down.
It may not suit you if
- Some days are repetitive regression triage and debug.
- If you want to shape the hardware itself, RTL or PD may satisfy you more.
Skill ladder
Three stages, in order. Each ends with something you can show, not just something you studied.

Learning path
- Digital electronicsVerification starts with knowing what correct hardware looks like.
- VerilogRead and write RTL so you can debug the design you test.
- Python-based testbenchescocotb lets you start testing with Python and Verilator for free.
- SystemVerilog OOPClasses, randomization and coverage before touching UVM.
- UVM step by stepFIFO, then UART, then AXI4-Lite, each with scoreboard and coverage.
- AssertionsWrite SVA for handshake and protocol rules on your own designs.
- One deep projectA full UVM environment with a verification plan and coverage report.
- Interview practiceDigital logic, SystemVerilog, UVM phases and debug scenarios.
Projects that prove it
What interviews test
Mistakes freshers make
- Jumping into UVM without SystemVerilog OOP, so learn classes and randomization first.
- Treating 100% code coverage as done, so write a functional coverage model from the spec.
- Copying a UVM template without understanding phases, so build one agent from scratch and explain it.
- Ignoring the design, so read the RTL of your DUT and know its corner cases.

Questions people ask
Can a CSE student get into verification?
Yes. Your programming strength helps a lot. You must self-learn digital logic, Verilog and basic timing, because interviews test them.
Do I need licensed simulators to learn UVM?
No. EDA Playground offers commercial simulators online for practice, and cocotb with Verilator is fully open-source. Your environment must still be your own work.
Is verification a lesser job than design?
No. Verification is often the critical path to tapeout, and senior DV engineers are highly valued. Many engineers move between DV and design later.
